Traditional Mardi Gras Mask-Making Class with Jackie Miller

Breaux Bridge—Mrs. Jackie Miller is well-known throughout Louisiana and beyond as a masterful Traditional Mardi Gras mask-maker. She has taught generations how to make these treasures of Acadiana culture and shared her skills on Saturday, February 6th, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in a class for children at Teche Center for the Arts located at 210 E. Bridge Street, Breaux Bridge, LA.

Mrs. Miller has made traditional Cajun Mardi Gras costumes and masks for 40 years. She is happy that while there will not be the usual celebrations of Mardi Gras, that TCA will provide a safe and fun activity for children to learn about the cultural tradition of rural Mardi Gras. It is hoped that those participating in this educational and creative activity will feel the excitement and fun spirit of the Mardi Gras season in this challenging time.

Because of COVID-19, TCA had in place precautions for social distancing and required everyone entering TCA and attending the class to wear a mask. TCA set up spaced workstations for the children for their health and safety and other precautions were in place. Children under 12 were accompanied by a parent.

Teche Center for the Arts and Mrs. Jackie hopes that children learned something of the unique history of our area and were able to express themselves creatively by making their own traditional masks. Families found they were spending Mardi Gras at home this year but with this class for kids, they created a new tradition for themselves with costuming fun.
