Children parade with their families through the streets\, children decked out in Mardi Gras costumes singing and playing Cajun music on fiddles\, guitars\, and percussion\, while “begging” for and receiving gumbo ingredients from homes along Washington Street skirting Bayou Teche. The children chase and catch a chicken along the parade route and share gumbo and dancing at TCA afterward. Children\, parents\, and grandparents are welcome to share in the festivities.

DESCRIPTION:Young adults (12-18)\, French speaking or not\, are encouraged to sign up for this FREE workshop at TCA\, in collaboration with NUNU Arts and Culture Collective. \nClick to register! \nThe Association culturelle « la maison de Léopold » brings to Louisiana the Martinique Carnival tradition of mask making. Thanks to the kindness of Jean-Luc Toussaint\, sculptor\, mask designer\, and president of the association\, La maison de Léopold in Martinique\, the tuition is free to young adult workshops which are being held in Louisiana Cultural Districts along the Teche Corridor in Breaux Bridge\, Cecilia and New Iberia. \nThe mask workshops are an opportunity to learn different techniques\, spark creativity\, develop initiative\, and dexterity. Participants will leave the workshop with a bundle of unique French speaking experiences and a wealth of knowledge on this versatile creative process. The instructors are bilingual in both French and English. The workshop will be taught in French\, but we encourage English speakers to enroll as well as everything can be explained in both languages. This retreat is highly recommended to help participants at all levels of French to loosen up and grow in their artistic and French speaking development.

SUMMARY:Poetic Rhythms: Writing and Performance Workshop for Youth
DESCRIPTION:Teche Center for the Arts presents teaching artist and spoken-word poet Alex PoeticSoul Johnson’s “Poetic Rhythms\,” an interactive workshop for youth ages 13-18 on Saturday\, Feb. 16. The workshop takes place from noon to 3 p.m. at Teche Center for the Arts. \nAdmission is $15 and includes lunch. Early registration is recommended. \n“Poetic Rhythms” will engage students in creative critical thinking\, creative writing\, and performance exercises tailored to strengthen students’ ability to express emotions creatively and to encourage personal empowerment in oratory skills. The workshop has proven beneficial in assisting teens and at-risk youth in their positive development of self-expression concerning emotions such as fear\, anger\, Johnson has worked as a teaching artist in the Lafayette Parish Juvenile Detention Home where she empowered incarcerated youth to create spoken word poem Eyes of the Sun and was featured as a 2017 TEDx presenter recounting her experience with LPDH youth. \n  \nRegister Now!
